The True Cost of Maintenance

Stop looking at the upfront price tag. Water filters are a long-term economic commitment.

The Razor and Blade Business Model

A water filtration housing is just an empty plastic shell. The company doesn't make their margins selling you the plastic—they make their margins selling you the proprietary carbon blocks you are forced to buy twice a year for the next decade.

When buying a system, you must calculate the Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) over a 5-year span.

Subscription Rentals (Coway / Cuckoo)

You pay RM120 per month. Period. This covers the machine financing, routine labor (technicians wiping it down), and the filters.

  • Year 1 Cost: RM1,440
  • Year 5 Cost: RM7,200 (Total Contract Value)

Direct Ownership (DIY Generic Systems)

You purchase a heavy-duty stainless steel under-sink unit outright for RM2,000. It utilizes non-proprietary, universal 10-inch filter cartridges (meaning you can buy any generic Korean or US brand).

  • Upfront Machine: RM2,000
  • Yearly Cartridge Spend (Sediment + Carbon): ~RM300
  • Year 5 Cost: RM3,500 (Including the machine)

Proprietary vs Universal Cartridges

The ultimate financial trap is buying a 'cheap' direct-ownership dispenser (RM800 upfront), but the cartridges use bizarre, proprietary twist-lock shapes that only the manufacturer sells. They can charge you RM400 per filter, and you have no choice but to pay it. Always demand systems that accept "Universal standard 10-inch" cartridges to guarantee you can buy cheap replacements online from third parties.
