The Appeal of DIY

Most modern under-sink filtration systems are explicitly designed for the DIY enthusiast. With color-coded 1/4-inch linear tubing and push-to-connect fittings, companies have gamified the installation process to appeal to massive online audiences (like Amazon buyers). Doing it yourself saves you anywhere from RM150 to RM400 on labor fees.

When to DIY

  • Countertop Dispensers: If it's just attaching a diverter valve onto your existing sink faucet.
  • Simple Under-Sink Systems: If the sink already has a spare hole for the dedicated drinking faucet (like an old soap dispenser hole).
  • Changing Cartridges: You should never pay labor to change simple twist-off cartridges.

When to Go Pro

  • Drilling Granite/Quartz: If your sink doesn't have a pre-existing hole for the tiny drinking faucet, drilling through stone requires specialty diamond bits. One mistake shatters your countertop.
  • RO Wastewater Drain: Reverse Osmosis requires drilling exactly a 1/4-inch hole into your PVC drain pipe to route the wastewater. If done improperly, raw sewage water will leak into your cabinets.
  • Whole House POE Systems: Working with 1-inch thick main municipal water lines requires heavy soldering (copper) or heavy PVC gluing. Do not DIY outdoor filters.
