Passive vs Active Alkaline Water
Alkaline water is simply water with a pH level higher than 7 (usually around 8.5 to 9.5). There are two radically different ways to achieve this:
Passive Remineralization
Most basic under-sink filters utilize a passive cartridge filled with magnesium and calcium beads. As pure water flows past these beads, trace amounts dissolve, naturally raising the pH. This is cheap, effective, and requires no electricity.
Active Electric Ionizers
True "Ionizers" push water across charged titanium plates coated in platinum. Using brute-force electricity (electrolysis), the machine splits the water molecules based on their electrical charge, creating two separate streams: one highly alkaline stream for drinking, and one highly acidic stream (often used for cleaning or skincare).
Do You Need One?
Electric ionizers can cost upwards of RM8,000. While proponents claim alkaline water neutralizes excess stomach acid and boasts highly bioavailable micro-cluster absorption, the scientific community maintains that a healthy human body naturally regulates its own pH via the kidneys and lungs perfectly well.
If you suffer from severe acid reflux (GERD), an ionizer may provide genuine relief. However, for the average family, a passive magnesium cartridge on a standard RO system provides 90% of the benefit at 10% of the cost.
